THANKS SO MUCH for another successful TAD. Between all our events, we had an estimated 520 attendees!! We accomplished a ton of education and should all be proud of a job well done. Planning for TAD 2008 will start soon!
TRANSGENDER AWARENESS DAYS (TAD)
The purpose of Transgender Awareness Days (TAD) at Bowling Green State University is to further the education, visibility and empowerment of transgender, transsexual, intersex, genderqueer, gender-variant and allied students, faculty, staff and community members. The events, spread over a period of 6 days, will consist of speakers, art, film screenings, performance, spoken word, and educational/activist programs to help promote gender diversity and trans civil rights.

2:30 PM : Transgender People, Allies and Social Change (Union 201)
This workshop, presented by members of Transcendence, will cover transgender 101, being an ally to the trans community, and getting involved with transgender politics and civil rights.
7:30 PM : Transgender Day of Remembrance. Gish Theatre (105 Hanna Hall.)
In the 5th Annual DOR at BGSU, we will honor the trans people who have died due to violence in 2007. Featuring a speak-out, candlelight vigil and reception to follow in the Women’s Center, 107 Hanna Hall.

Keynote Address: Sile Singleton. "The Rhetoric of the Rainbow or Why Are All the 'Gay People' White?"
Set against the backdrop of a socially constructed notion that communities of color are “more homophobic" than white communities, Sile Singleton chases the metaphor of the rainbow from her earliest childhood memories in the church to today’s rainbow clad “twirly” boys and "dykes on bikes.” Sile guides the audience through the very personal journey of an American, Black, Midwest, Queer, Trans-Person and her quest for the symbol of hope and "everlasting inclusion."

7:30 PM : Union 308. Film Screening: A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story. Co-sponsored by the Latino Student Union.
This film tells the real-life story of Gwen Araujo, a Latina, transgender teen who was brutally murdered in a hate crime in 2002.

"Before I Was King" Sile P. Singleton noted gender illusionist, multiculturalist, critical theorist and storyteller, shares her reflections on her own personal and political evolution as a drag king. Beginning with the early/mid 1990s through present day happenings, Singleton guides the audience through the maze of transformations that have influenced her life, work and artistry. From "a queer little girl" to a "trans-identified queer culture producer," Sile invites conversations that "make most folks uneasy." Always entertaining and enlightening, she uses frank conversations dipped in humor to navigate the tricky and often murky intersections of race, class, sexuality, gender, academic elitism and social activism. In our Third Annual Gender Play Cabaret, come join us for a fun night of entertainment to cap off TAD 2007. Featuring local drag kings and queens, folk music acts and spoken word slam poetry, this evening will make you think about gender in new and creative ways. Monday, November 14, 6:30 PM Bowen-Thompson Student Union 201A
“Restroom Revolution: A Discussion of Gender-Neutral Bathrooms on Campus.”
This will be a community forum to discuss the recent VISION List-proc debate regarding gender-neutral restrooms on the BGSU campus. We will discuss the need for gender-neutral facilities and ways of educating the broader campus community about the gender-neutral movement. We will also screen the short film Toilet Training. The video addresses the persistent discrimination, harassment, and violence that people who transgress gender norms face in gender segregated bathrooms. Using the stories of people who have been harassed, arrested or beaten for trying to use bathrooms, Toilet Training focuses on bathroom access in public space, in schools, and at work.

Mariette Pathy Allen: A Photographic Journey through GenderLand
Mariette Pathy Allen is an award-winning photographer of the transgender community for over 25 years. She is the author of Transformations: Cross-Dressers and Those who Love Them and The Gender Frontier. Her presentation will be a slideshow of her work which showcases the diversity within the transgender community.

Transgender Day of Remembrance: Rally, Candlelight Vigil and Reception
This event is an annual, international event held to remember victims of anti-transgender hatred and prejudice. This will be BGSU’s third annual event. The Speak-out will include many BGSU faculty and staff, BG community members and several guests from out of town. The candle-light vigil and March will follow outside the Union to end with a reception held in the LGBT Resource Center, 404 Saddlemire.

The Gender Cabaret will be emceed by Luster, and featuring drag performers such as Dylan Gauge, Devin Dam, Victor Victoria, and J.J. Cox, musical guests: Kate Peterson and Sarah Cleaver, writers and performance artists Joelle Ruby Ryan, Bailey Garvin, Jess Simmons, and all who wish to explore gender themes.

The symposium registration begins @ 9:30, followed by panel discussions beginning at 10am. Topics to include: “Trans Identities and Diversity: Exploring Difference, Building Unity”, “EnGendering Change: The Successes and Challenges of Trans Organization”, “Transgenderism and Education: Campus Politics, Social Justice Pedagogy and Community”. Ending with the viewing and discussion of Yo Soy Asi about transgender identity in Chile. Continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments included.
